The Subaru Crosstrek and Honda HR-V each have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and are closely matched in standard performance. The HR-V makes a bit more horsepower (158 vs. 152), while the Crosstrek has the edge in torque (145 vs. 138 pound-feet). Both models send power to the wheels through a continuously variable transmission. However, like all Subaru SUVs, the Crosstrek comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, providing surefooted handling and control for snowy Wisconsin winters. The Honda HR-V has standard front-wheel drive. AWD is an option, but it's not standard for any HR-V trim.
Are you seeking something a little peppier to power your Middleton travels? Subaru Crosstrek Sport, Limited, and Wilderness models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, boosting performance to 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. The Honda HR-V doesn't offer an upgraded engine option.

The all-new Subaru Wilderness trim enhances the Crosstrek's off-road prospects for outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventures beyond paved streets. Wilderness models have terrain-tuned suspension with 9.3 inches of ground clearance, Yokohama® GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, and a dual-function X-MODE® system with an additional Deep Snow/Mud setting. It also adds a transmission oil cooler to more than double the Crosstrek's max tow rating to 3,500 pounds.
While the Honda HR-V has all-wheel drive as an option, it's tuned more for on-road driving and isn't as capable on roads less traveled. The HR-V has seven inches of ground clearance, and its max trailering capability tops out at 1,500 pounds.

Both crossovers come standard with a 7-inch touchscreen and smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, every 2024 Crosstrek above the base model gets a new 11.6-inch infotainment display and cable-free connectivity through wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The HR-V reserves its largest touchscreen (9.0 inches) and wireless smartphone integration for range-topping EX-L trim.
Both models come standard with many driver-assistance technologies, including forward collision mitigation, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control. However, the Crosstrek has a more capable "Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering" system. It also includes steering-responsive headlights for all models, a feature you won't find in the HR-V lineup.
